To live a healthy life for yourself, your family, your community, your business, it is crucial to meet with the “Big Boss.”
The name “Big Boss” holds huge stereotypes and feelings attached with it just as the term “Father” or “Coach” or “God.” Everyone has different experiences with each of these terms and places different attributes on these figures which leads to an array of feelings associated with the idea of meeting with one or any of them. I believe God is all of these things, and though I relate with the figure of “Father” most directly, I am learning the importance of relating with God as a Boss.
I see a boss as one who helps equip me for being the best me I can offer the world.
I go through training with a boss. I also see a boss as one who gives me a “why” for all the training and a grace for my experiments as I stumble along the way. Encouragement, critique, encouragement all sandwiched together as He orchestrates things behind the scenes without my knowledge, setting me up for success and incredible opportunities, and also challenges to help me grow and see things I couldn’t before.
Yes, meeting with the Big Boss is crucial for us in vision casting, brainstorming ideas, planning, training, and assistance in launching us to impact our community. Our entrepreneurial family is in desperate need of this Superior role which provides us with purpose, influence, support, and creativity.
But, let’s be careful here. Let’s take care to drop all the “should”s out of our metal schemas for just a bit, shall we. The all too often heard (from others and our own voices), I “should” meet with God every day. Or I “should” read the Bible. Or I “should” say my prayers before bed without falling asleep. Or I “should” go to church.
No need putting the “should” sacrifice on the altar for the sake of pleasing some distant God. These “should”s need to be dropped to get vulnerable with yourself on what your actual feelings are with the prospect of meeting with…Him. Only then will we see what we actually believe – and whether these beliefs are based on truth or lies doesn’t matter so much as the point that we actually believe them. And it is effecting the way we commune – or don’t commune – with God which has a direct effect (for good or ill) on how we do life.
So the blanket how-to is not here. The truth that your life will be enriched by spending time with God on a regular basis remains. However, there is no formula. There is a level of participation and vulnerability that is required.
You need to engage. And sometimes that is the hardest –and scariest – thing because it leaves us open and unguarded.
I think most of us know what our next step is towards God. We need to stop looking around for the answers because many times I believe He is giving us those answers. And perhaps it is something we don’t expect but probably scares us pretty good. And it is often times something that no one would prescribe.
A few un-prescribed steps I needed to take to commune better with the Big Boss of my Business, my Life:
- Going on a fiction reading fast
- Me asking what God wanted in a certain decision – and Him being quiet with the feeling that He wanted me to choose
- Stop reading my Bible every day and relate with God in a “fun” way
- Start reading the Bible – in a different way, a creative and me-expressive way – and re-find my love for His story within humanity
- Sitting quiet and practice listening and seeing Him…for uncomfortable amounts of time…and address emotions that arose during those times
- Address the fear and worry in my life and fight for peace with Holy Spirit…and learn to feel what His peace looks like.
- Go to three church services a Sunday
- Don’t go to any church service and deal with my judgment against myself
- Sleep in and spend time with God throughout my day…and even nap during my “time with the Boss”
- Get up early and greet Him with the dawn
I share these with you NOT to prescribe something for you (because as you can see, I needed different ways to relate with God in different times of life as He was working something fresh into me and teaching me something new about Him or myself!), but to encourage you that your activity (or lack of it) can be weird things, it can be normal things, it can be giving up something “good” or engaging in something unexpected. For you see, all along the way I would read book after book after book looking for the clear cut “how to” in relating with God. And I would read a book from someone I really respect and be so frustrated at the end that there was no formula!
The formula is MEET WITH HIM!
The formula is get real (and maybe uncomfortable) with yourself and what you feel with the prospect of meeting with your Big Boss. The formula is build history together – doing stuff you love and doing stuff you don’t! You have to engage. You have to risk being open. Feel all you feel. Delve into why you feel that way. Sift out the lies, wrestle through the disappointment, and replace them with the truth. Experience the truth.
Experience Him -The Big Boss.
It is well worth the risk.
